Increvable! — Indestructible! in French — is a faux-reissue of a long-lost French album that was never actually released. Think of it as a Cluster record from an alternate timeline: one of those strange, mysterious electronic-music islands that seemed to exist just outside the edges of the map back then, if it had washed up in France instead of Germany. It’s designed to be experienced as a physical package: something you can touch, hold, read, smell, and listen to.
The Long Version
The whole record is a charade, and it’s meant to be. Increvable! is styled as a genuine 1969 reissue — the kind of record you’d find crate-digging decades later and wonder how you’d never heard of it. The touchstone is Cluster: those early German electronic acts who made music that felt like it came from nowhere and everywhere, mysterious islands adrift in the underground. Increvable! imagines what that same island might have looked like if it had formed in France instead.
The bit goes all the way down to the promotional photography — vintage equipment, era-appropriate styling, a room dressed to look exactly like the kind of place this “lost” record might have actually been made and then rediscovered. Every piece of evidence in the frame is staged specifically to make the charade convincing.
Sonically, the record leans into exactly the kind of unplaceable strangeness that makes those “lost island” records so compelling decades later. The title track is the clearest proof of concept: an oddball electro-samba in 7, launching from one continent into Afrobeat grooves and isometric arpeggios sharp enough to make Robert Fripp smirk. By the time the codetta hits, it’s throwing pug dub, jungle breaks, tablas, slide guitar, and faux-Gregorian chant into the same room and somehow getting them to agree with each other — the album’s apex, and its best argument for a genre that had no business existing in 1969, yet sounds like it always had. The refrain says it plainly enough: “Je suis increvable! Je suis invincible. Je suis très vivant.” — I’m indestructible. I’m invincible. I’m very alive.
Increvable! arrived during a hard stretch — the darkest days of pandemic isolation, which happened to coincide with a prolonged Phoenix heat wave that summer. Being unable to leave the house was one kind of isolation; the desert outside making it physically punishing to try was another, layered right on top. It became, in Charles’s own words, a floatation device — a refuge and a catharsis while the world outside felt like it was falling apart.
