Some History

Charles studied composition at CalArts under Morton Subotnick, Mel Powell, and Terry Riley, alongside Lou Harrison, James Tenney, and Wadada Leo Smith. In his own words, on Powell’s lasting advice:

“Mel taught me ‘good composers borrow, great composers steal.’ I must be a great composer now, because I stole a ton of Mel, Terry and Mort riffs on Crush Depth.”

Years of studying and teaching counterpoint left him devoted to what he calls the four B’s — Bach, Brahms, Bartók, and the Beach Boys.
